Explaining Real Conservatism

Posted by Kevin Crouch on June 2, 2009

I was contacted by a “proud liberal American” and fellow classmate today, asking why I supported Rush Limbaugh for Chairman of the Republican National Committee. I had the opportunity to explain the nature of a real conservative, so I thought I would post it here as well.

Here’s her comments:

rush limbaugh is a fat sack of crap. why the hell would you want him as your party representative? yay for close mindedness!! we should go back to segregation too huh? :) oh and i love neo- mccarthyism who should be first on our black list?

Here was my response:

First of all, I want him to be the leader of the Republican National Committee for the reasons listed in my video. The current chairman, Michael Steele, continuously apologizes for the conservative stances of the party, and the comments that express those views. The party cannot prosper with a leader who apologizes for our core identity.

Secondly, Rush Limbaugh, alongside other real conservatives, does not endorse racism or segregation. If you listen to the recent comments of Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor, she said that in many cases, she believes a latina woman has better judgement than a white male. This is racism and bigotry, and Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, and other real conservatives are bashing her for it. A real conservative judges by the individual, and by their character. It’s the liberals and progressives who see blacks and hispanics as a struggling minority who needs the government’s help because they cannot make it themselves. I, and other real conservatives, see the opportunity of each individual, no matter their race, creed, sex, or religion.

Closed mindedness is perhaps one of the pitfalls of talk radio, somewhat of a trait that overcomes the mind of someone with their own air time being listened to by millions. If you think Rush is closed minded, listen to Mark Levin, who believes he’s the “Great One” and is the one who is right above everyone else. You’ll see what true closed-mindedness is, and that Rush just has a small pride issue in comparison.

Finally, I find it funny that you ask me about neo-mccarthyism and blacklisting. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report warning of “Right-Wing Extremists”, very similar to the days of McCarthy, and the witch hunts through Hollywood and the State Department. This memo, in broad terms, targets conservatives and right-wingers as terrorists and threats. Now, the true targets should be groups such as Aryan Nation and the National Socialist Movement, which press forward fascist-racist agendas. But, this memo, again like those targeting communists in the heat of the Cold War, blankets all right-wing conservatives, “blacklisting” people like me, John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Rush Limbaugh, George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone, Ron Paul, Mark Coulson, Clay Scarborough, etc. Do all these people seem like threats to you?

I appreciate your arguments, and understand your dedication to your views. I invite you to watch my latest video entitled “Kevin Calls for Conservative Leadership”, and to visit my website at KevinCrouch.wordpress.com.
